My problem for fuck's sake, this led to the obligatory story-focused episodes feeling
bitter and so consumed with fourth wall-breaking and meta-commentary that it made fans question
why they even cared about the story or characters in the first place.
Rick and Morty is primarily an episodic comedy, but those first two seasons, hell even season
free to some extent, were pretty effective when it came to actually telling a serialized
story in the background that got people to care, suddenly heel-turning and doing this
all the time.
There's a really good video by just Lance and Corbin that I watched recently that talks
about this in more detail, highly recommend this video actually, it's pretty much what
inspired me to pick the show back up, re-watching season 7 and actually watching season 8 for
the first time, but the gist of it is that Rick and Morty is a show firmly steeped in
nihilism.
You know, if the "dank memes" that Rick and Morty fans produced didn't tip you off,
I just had to write "dank memes" in my script and over time, the show went from using its
nihilistic outlook in sort of a healthy way, with the characters acknowledging that nothing
natures and still being able to find
